There is still a lot more to come. I still have a great pool of images.

I also want to cover the Netherlands soon. Would you guys help me out with some more in-depth information about the Dutch signs?
For example: I still have trouble understanding this strange system of this ANWB "club for bike riders" being in charge of traffic signs ... ;-)
Is this a private company? Are they in any way controlled by the government?

Hello Ralf,

Welcome to the Dutch Wegenforum.

The Dutch type font is already made ; there is a webpage, were we can download the font, but the webpage is down.

The system of the ANWB (Club for car divers), and how about signposting, you can find many more in this forum.
The ANWB is, so far as I know a private club.

ANWB is a historic name, but they've decided to keep it. At the moment, they are a tourism and motorists association.

Today, the official name is Koninklijke Nederlandse Toeristenbond ANWB, which means Royal Dutch Tourist Bond ANWB. Formally, the letters ANWB have no meaning anymore.

When founded in 1883, when there was almost no motorised traffic, the ANWB was an organisation for cyclists. Now it's an organisation for tourists and motorists, they are also responsible for many traffic signs and the motorway emergency phones.

Hallo Ralf, Willkommen.

The ANWB was the first to place directional roadsigns in the Netherlands, at first as a private society.
The ANWB has started as the A.N.W.B. = Algemeene Nederlandsche Wielrijders Bond (old spelling, meaning General Dutch Bikers Society) in 1883. The ANWB got involved in the upcoming car tourism as well, and developed into the Koninklijke Nederlandse Toeristenbond ANWB, the Royal Dutch Tourist Society ANWB. Placing directional roadsigns was granted exclusively to the ANWB until 2003. That year they lost the contract for the national roads, and next year they will probably loose the contract for two provinces as well.
The signage on roads has been the responsibility of the road authorities since nearly a century now, but up to the latest contract changes 5 years ago the ANWB had a monopoly in design, construction and maintainance, with 100% funding by the road authorities. This is different nowadays - for the national roads for instance the signage is being designed by a private engineering-company.

The fonts used on the Dutch roads these days:
National roads: RWS-Ee (ANWB-Ee), which is a slightly adjusted version of the FHWA Highway Gothic/Interstate E(Modified). It was already metrificated in 1966 (the year it was introduced in NL) and adjusted for metric use on CAD-systems in 1989 - which is the reason for most differences to the American original.
Provincial and municipal roads: ANWB-Ee and Cc on older signs, ANWB Uu on newer. ANWB-Ee is the same as RWS-Ee. A condensed version Cc is available, and derived from the FHWA Interstate C-alphabet. The Uu-alphabet was designed by typographist Gerard Unger in the late 90'-ies. It should resemble ANWB Ee but able to be used instead of ANWB-Cc on small handsigns. In my believe, Uu is a complete faillure. Reading signs in Uu at 80-100 km/h is terrible, which is a result of both the fontdesign as well as the spacing between the characters.
Roads of the municipality of Almelo: also use of Tiresias Signfont on newer signage. Tiresias was designed for people with bad eyesight for use on paper - that doesn't mean it's the best choice for roadsignage...

Pictures of most signage fonts can be found on this Wegenforum-board. ;)

This almost covers all of my questions about the ANWB! :D

Rene schreef: In my believe, Uu is a complete faillure. Reading signs in Uu at 80-100 km/h is terrible, which is a result of both the fontdesign as well as the spacing between the characters.
True. But most of all: The design of the Dutch sign posts itself! Mr. Unger's job was to create a font which needs less space to fit the text on the smaller fixed-size direction signs. He achieved this goal. But the the task itself was wrong! The size of a direction sign must be based on the content, never ever the other way around! So in my opinion, the general concept of these signs-on-a-pole is all wrong:

They are probably much cheaper than our equivalent signs in Germany, but clear legibility should be the top priority, shouln't it?

Well, constructing those heavy poles is not that cheap at all. And yes, also in my opinion (as a traffic engineer) legibility should be top priority.
I still think FHWA Interstate E(M) (originally called BPR Highway Gothic) is the best designed roadfont ever. And although DIN1451 hasn't been designed for road purposes at first, it works quite well. Better than British Transport or Swiss/Belgian SNV.

The font used on the italian road signs are Signals Normale and Signals Stresso, according this document. I have never found these fonts on the web, but after having searched for a while, I endly found a vectorial file (.eps) with all the characters of the both fonts (here, bottom of the page). I converted it into two font files which can be downloaded here.

The Stresso Font(leuke naam trouwens/funny name) looks good, looks like the real Italian roadnumber font.
But unfortunately, the Normal font is an exact copy of the Transport Heavy font.

But thanks for your work. I might make some Italian signs sometime!

Duitsland: DIN 1451 (Engschrift & Mittelschrift)
Frankrijk: Caracteres L1, L2 en L4
Groot Brittannië: Transport
Tsjechië: DIN 1451 (Engschrift & Mittelschrift)
VS: FHWA schrift & Clearview
Canada: FHWA schrift
Griekenland: Carretera, DIN 1451 Mittelschrift
Turkije: Carretera

Duitsland heeft juist een hogere letter, maar de tegenzijde daarvan is een smallere letter. Uit de RWBA vis ik zo snel dat Duitsland op portalen 420 mm gebruikt.
