The Tunnel de la Croix-Rousse crosses under the hills between the Rhône and the Saône rivers. The tunnel was built initially as the one tube road tunnel, and it's opened to traffic in 1952. At that time, they didn't have the emergency doors for every 150m. It was the most important road tunnel in Lyon before the Fourvière Tunnel was built later in 1971.
Some years later, the original tunnel took age due to its seniority, rising of frequently closings. Some vehicles over 3,5t are prohibited.
They have decided to restore entirely the tunnel and building the second tube exclusively reserved to sustainable transport (Bus, cycles and pedestrians). The renovation of this tunnel was started in 2010 and fully opened in 2013.
